5 Reasons Researchers Are Studying CBD Oil

5 Reasons Researchers Are Studying CBD Oil | Articles | The Pain Clinic

The cannabis plant has over 100 different compounds. The two most commonly known are CBD and THC. CBD doesn’t have the psychoactive properties of THC, but preliminary findings note that it could play a positive role in treating a range of medical conditions.

CBD has been legalised for medical use in several countries, and its therapeutic value is being studied closely. There are already several accounts of anecdotal evidence that indicate the growing potential for this game-changing drug. Since it has fewer side effects than conventional medicine, it could prove to be especially valuable for those people coping with chronic conditions and those who have not found relief in conventional treatments.

While CBD is not considered to ‘cure’ any conditions, it has been noted that when implemented as part of a treatment plan, it can help to significantly improve quality of life.

1. Reduces Seizure Frequency

The first CBD-based medication to be approved by the FDA was for seizures that resulted from rare forms of epilepsy, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Dravet syndrome. The approval was based on the results from three different trials in which 516 patients received the drug or a placebo in addition to their regular medication. It was observed that the frequency of seizures reduced for those who were found to be on the drug.

CBD for seizures is one of the reasons that medical marijuana is prescribed in NZ.

Researchers believe that the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of CBD provide some form of neuroprotection against pathological disorders. Preclinical studies also indicate promising results against Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

2. Provides Relief from Chronic Pain

Preliminary findings have shown that CBD oil helps to ease pain in various contexts. An American study conducted in 2020 looked at the use of topical CBD application on patients with symptomatic peripheral neuropathy that was a result of brain and spinal cord nerve damage. The results recorded a reduction in several symptoms, including sharp pains and feelings of itchiness. Topically applied CBD is more localised and is able to treat pain in the concerned area. Being applied directly on the problem area may enable it to have a stronger effect.

A review carried out in 2020 concluded that CBD has potential benefits to relieve chronic pain and reduce inflammation in the body. It could also improve sleep, as insomnia and frequent waking are often experienced by chronic pain sufferers. But these benefits would depend on the condition and need further research to determine safe dosages.

Additionally, a study published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine found that patients do not build a tolerance toward the effects of CBD and so do not need to up their dosage with time. This is especially helpful in cases of chronic pain where patients often develop a dependence on the pain medication.

3. Possible Opioid Addiction Treatment

It has been suggested that CBD could help wean off those who are dependent on opioids. Since CBD has no psychoactive properties, there is little chance of transferring the addiction. As part of a study, CBD was administered to those who had a heroin addiction. In just one week, CBD reduced the patients’ withdrawal anxiety, cravings, and cortisol levels (salivary) and even balanced the resting heart rate. As with most cases related to CBD, further research has been recommended for more conclusive results.

4. Soothes Anxieties and Stress

CBD has a widespread reputation for its ability to induce calm. Its effects on anxiety are also being studied closely. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, CBD oil Nz has been seen to lower stress in rats and has the potential to treat generalised anxiety disorder (GAD). The people being studied had their behavioural signs and physiological symptoms assessed. It was found that both showed an improved reaction to stressful events with the administration of CBD.

It has been suggested that CBD oil may also help cope with other forms of anxiety, including Seasonal Anxiety Disorder (SAD) and insomnia induced by anxiety. Studies have been carried out to test its mettle for PTSD as well – especially for nightmares and intrusive, repetitive memories. While early results are promising, further controlled studies need to be carried out for more conclusive results.

5. Eases Symptoms of ALS

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a disease that degrades nerve cells and causes those around the spinal cord and brain to deteriorate. This results in steadily worsening muscle control as the disease progresses. While the cause or triggers of ALS is unclear, it is understood that it could be hereditary. There is no cure for this disease, but two approved medications can help manage the symptoms.

A study added CBD to the treatment in combination with THC. In 2019, ALS patients were given this combination in varying doses, depending on their individual cases. Those with higher levels of tight, stiff muscles (otherwise known as spasticity) reported higher levels of satisfaction with this treatment than those with mild to moderate levels of spasticity.
